Polyomaviridae is a family of nonenveloped viruses with a circular double-stranded DNA genome. Natural hosts for Polyomaviridae are primates, including humans and monkeys, birds, cattle, rabbits, and rodents. Currently, viruses in this family that infect humans are BK polyomavirus associated with interstitial nephritis and hemorrhagic cystitis, JC polyomavirus associated with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy in immunocompromised person; KI polyomavirus identified in respiratory secretions of patients with respiratory symptoms, WU polyomavirus, isolated from patients with similar symptoms; Merkel cell polyomavirus, associated with the rare Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC); and trichodysplasia spinulosa–associated polyomavirus, associated with a rare skin condition in immunocompromised persons.
